As a major contributor to biodiversity loss, agriculture in the EU must shift to restore agroecosystems so that they can provide benefits for biodiversity and climate. Carbon farming can help achieve this goal if standards integrate adequate safeguards and ensure net positive biodiversity impacts.
In December 2022, the Parliament and the Council reached agreement on the CBAM and the reform of the EU ETS. While these new instruments constitute an unprecedented move in the emissions reduction effort, much remains to be decided and even more remains to be done.
