EU and US Approaches to Key Climate and Energy Challenges

KEYWORDS: carbon capture and storage-trade-CAP-biofuels

IEEP and our partner the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have produced a series of papers on EU and US approaches to cap and trade systems; biofuels; and carbon capture and storage.

These papers were produced as part of our ongoing work under the Transatlantic Platform for Action on the Global Environment (T-PAGE). We are working with NRDC to create a forum for debate among EU and US civil society to improve understanding of key climate and energy issues on both sides of the Atlantic. Cap and trade, biofuels and carbon capture and storage were identified as issues representing particular challenges to the environmental community.

The paper on Cap and Trade Systems in Europe reviews the EU ETS and some of the options being considered for its future phases. A paper on the development of Cap and Trade Policy in the US examines some of the bottom up and voluntary initiatives currently being undertaken. The paper Biofuels for Transport – European and US Approaches summarises the European and US policy approaches and some of the challenges being faced, including how to ensure sustainability, indirect impacts of land-use change and adopting second generation biofuels. Carbon Capture and Storage – European and US Approaches examines the role of coal in EU and US energy supply, options available and current obstacles to deployment, policy approaches and incentives provided on both sides of the Atlantic and some of the concerns surrounding the technology.
