The Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) invites applications for two outstanding individuals to join its Board at a defining moment for Europe’s sustainability agenda.
For nearly 50 years, IEEP has been at the forefront of environmental policymaking, providing trusted, evidence-based analysis to European institutions and global partners. Today, as the EU navigates increasing complexity in delivering the desired environmental standards and broader sustainability ambitions, IEEP is strengthening its governance to amplify its impact and strategic reach.
The opportunity
IEEP is seeking two dynamic Board members to join the board and help steer the organization through its next phase of growth, influence, and expanded EU/global outreach. In this pivotal role, you will provide strategic leadership to shape impactful environmental policies and elevate IEEP’s reputation as a trusted, evidence-based think tank.
As a Board member, you will play a key role in guiding our mission to influence policy-making in a complex and evolving landscape. Your contributions will help set the course for transforming our ecosystems within planetary boundaries, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future.
The two Board roles we are looking to fill with focus on these two areas:
Strategic policy and engagement Leader
This role is designed for a highly connected and influential figure with deep insight into EU and international policy landscapes.
You will:
- Shape IEEP’s strategic positioning within EU and global policy debates
- Bring private sector and industry insights into sustainability discussions
- Strengthen high-level relationships across institutions, governments, and international networks
- Enhance IEEP’s visibility, credibility, research and policy impact
- Provide insight and challenge to support executive leaders
Sustainable growth and strategic partnerships Leader
This role goes beyond traditional financial oversight, focusing on enabling IEEP’s long-term sustainability and strategic expansion.
You will:
- Guide the organisation’s financial strategy and long-term resilience
- Support the development of innovative funding models and strategic partnerships
- Strengthen IEEP’s ability to scale impact across Europe and internationally
- Provide governance oversight on financial performance and risk
Who we are looking for
IEEP is seeking individuals with the credibility, judgement, and strategic vision to operate at Board level in a mission-driven, international organisation.
You will bring:
- Senior leadership experience in complex organisations (e.g. EU institutions, NGOs, think tanks, public or private sector)
- Strong understanding of EU policy and/or global sustainability challenges
- Industry or private sector insights in one of various sectors
- Experience in governance, ideally at Board or equivalent strategic level
- The ability to engage with and champion evidence-based policy and environmental research
- A collaborative yet independent mindset, with the confidence to both support and challenge
Experience in political engagement, diplomacy, finance, philanthropy, or partnership development will be highly valued, depending on the role.

IEEP is an independent environmental think tank based in Brussels, working across climate, biodiversity, circular economy, and sustainable development. Its work bridges science and policy, supporting decision-makers with robust, actionable insights.
Operating as an international non-profit (AISBL), IEEP collaborates with EU institutions, Member States, academia, and civil society, and is part of a growing European network of sustainability think tanks.
Commitment
- Term: 4 years (renewable)
- Engagement: Quarterly Board meetings, Annual General Meeting and occasional strategic input
- Scope: European and international
- Remuneration: we can only cover related board expenses and travel
