To celebrate our first 50 years of work, throughout 2026, we will feature messages, reflections and videos from colleagues, friends, allies and supporters of IEEP. This month, MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen shares her wishes, highlighting the importance of organisations such as IEEP as well as the challenges we need to address for a better future.
Sirpa Pietikäinen has been a Finnish member of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament since 2008. At the European Parliament, MEP Pietikäinen is a member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and of the intergroups on Welfare and Conservation of Animals and Mental Health, amongst others.
MEP Pietikäinen is a member of the IEEP Strategic Advisory Council, providing invaluable input and inspiration for new projects and activities, and offering feedback on the political and societal implications of IEEP pursuits.
Understanding planetary boundaries, sustainability, and environmental issues is at the core of our challenges nowadays. A big part of the EU’s work and steps taken in the field of sustainability and the environment have been supported by science, NGOs, and, to a certain extent, forward-looking businesses. IEEP should be proud of the work done over the past 50 years and still has a significant role to play. As challenges grow, IEEP’s role is even more important and needed. Politicians in the European Parliament and Member States need support; organisations like IEEP can provide intelligence, ideas, and recommendations and continue to raise awareness and enlightenment.
