Afifa Imtiaz is a natural hazard risk modelling expert specializing in probabilistic risk assessment, vulnerability modelling and uncertainty quantification. Through the 2026–27 EGU–IEEP Science–Policy Mentorship program, she is expanding her understanding of European climate risk, disaster risk governance and the policy processes through which scientific evidence informs decisions on adaptation and resilience. Paired with Dr Louis Durrant, IEEP’s Lead for Climate Resilience and Risk Governance, she aims to explore how researchers and policymakers can work more effectively together to translate risk evidence into actionable policy. 

As a Senior Researcher at the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich, Afifa led urban-scale earthquake risk modelling for Basel, informing cantonal emergency planning, building regulation and public risk communication. Previously, she worked in the Risk and Prevention division at the French Geological Survey (BRGM), where she contributed to France’s national earthquake catastrophe model for the public-sector reinsurer CCR and assessed seismic hazard for nuclear, hydroelectric and industrial facilities. 

She holds a PhD in Earth, Universe and Environmental Sciences (Grenoble Alpes University, France), a joint MSc in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (Imperial College London, ROSE School, Italy, Joseph Fourier University, France), and a BSc in Civil Engineering (SUST, Bangladesh). She speaks Bengali, English and French.
