How the European Commission can deliver on its renewed commitment to the 2030 Agenda

Author: Eloïse Bodin

The European Commission has published a staff working document that reaffirms the institution’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda in light of COVID-19. What needs to happen to translate this into reality?

The European Semester Autumn package of economic policy recommendations, released by the European Commission earlier this week, includes a very encouraging staff working document on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In light of the COVID-19 crisis, the document reaffirms the Commission’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda and explains how the institution will take this forward through its internal and external action policies, while also monitoring progress at Member State- and EU- levels.

IEEP is preparing a more in-depth analysis of the document, but our previous work on implementation tracking already suggests that the Commission needs to develop a robust methodology for tracking the SDG expenditure in the EU budget to ensure the commitments translate into reality.
