IEEP is excited to announce the appointment of Antoine Oger, currently Head of the Global and SDGs programme at IEEP, as new Research Director. Antoine will take over the role from Dr Ben Allen, who is leaving IEEP after over a decade at the Institute in a variety of roles from co-managing the then Agriculture and Land Management team to a period as the Interim Executive Director.
Reflecting on his career at IEEP, Ben said:
“Over the past 12+ years I have had the privilege to work on a wide variety of EU policy topics, from land use and the circular bioeconomy to sustainable finance and climate policy. All have been with the intention of shaping these policies to deliver more for the environment and climate. Over that time, I’ve met and worked with an equally diverse and amazing group of people at IEEP (and of course beyond) that have a shared passion and a common goal. I have travelled across Europe, from the salt flats of Slovenia (by train and bus from the UK!) to the orange blossom of Seville, and many places in between. The Eurostar has become a second home on rails, and I know Brussels better than I know London. All of this has been possible because of the time I have spent at IEEP. Yet all things must end, and it is now time for me to try something new, focusing more on sustainable finance and at a global level, using these levers to bring about change that needs to happen. I am leaving IEEP’s research teams in the very capable hands of Antoine Oger, who I know will do an excellent job, working with the Executive Management in guiding the organisation to greater heights! Whilst leaving IEEP is hard, this makes it a little easier.
The world needs organisations like IEEP, it has been a pleasure to be part of the journey, and I wish IEEP all the success it deserves.”
Antoine Oger is a specialist in environmental and more generally sustainability-related policies at the EU and global levels. He joined IEEP in 2021 and his work primarily focused on the coherence of the EU’s internal and external policies and on the greening of the EU’s trade policy. He previously worked for over ten years in providing technical assistance for the sustainable development of countries in the global south.
Commenting on his appointment, Antoine said:
“I am thrilled to have the chance to follow up on the excellent work done by Ben as Research Director for IEEP. I believe that the Institute has a key role to play in the design, development and implementation of sound sustainability-related policies in the EU. As an evidence-driven organisation, we have the chance to work closely with a wide range of stakeholders across EU and international institutions, academia, civil society, and industry, thus allowing us to provide detailed insights to relevant actors while always keeping in mind the bigger picture of the many challenges ahead. Whether we are looking at emissions, energy, biodiversity, nature restauration, transport, agriculture or land use issues, our current production and consumption models will have to undergo a profound transition to achieve a sustainable and fair society for all. I know that all the amazing people at IEEP are driven to make this objective a reality and I aim to do my best to support them on that path.”
Antoine Oger will officially starts his new role as of 1 July 2023.
