Sustainable food systems

Moving to a farming system that provides sufficient food to feed the world’s population, whilst reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts, requires significant changes on the consumption side, including increases in plant based and alternative protein sources. It is also important that actors in the middle of the supply chain, such as processors and retailers, play their role in the transition to healthy and sustainable food chains.

Our priorities in this area:

Identifying policy options and governance models for sustainable food systems in Europe, whilst taking into account impacts outside the EU.

Promoting policy innovation to address unsustainable diets and consumption patterns, addressing environmental and health simultaneously.

Furthering knowledge and understanding of the land use and environmental impacts of different consumption-side changes.
